A Young Professional Talent Night event was organized by ISPE in Leiden with the collaboration of Young J&J. The event primarily focused on the professional and personal development of young professionals within the pharmaceutical industry, but the principles and the knowledge transferred were useful for any individual who intends to succeed and grow his career in the right direction. Such an event is useful for a young professional to be part of an event that focuses on professional development and also to engage in discussions with seniors having more experience and a wider area of knowledge. The event included both young and experienced experts from engineering, projects, finance to supply chain and etc.
The first presentation delivered was on the topic of DISC-Model which is a tool to describe and categorize different behaviors adapted by a person in different situations. Arjan van Dijk from ProjectKwadraat explained how the personal development in a Professional environment is linked with self-awareness or self-consciousness. It is crucial to not only understand oneself but also to understand the personality traits of the people around us in order to have effective communication with each other. The DISC model categorizes the behavioral traits of most common personalities along with their recognition patterns. The key take-away from the discussion was that self-consciousness is important for personal as well as professional development.
Another presentation was delivered on the topic of social videos and their importance in current recruitment process and career growth. Thomas Slotboom from SollVision explained how it is statistically more effective to include a Personal video in which we talk about our personality, ambitions, goals and motivations. In short, the aspects of personality which are difficult to extract just by looking at a piece of paper. This video gives a personal touch to the applications and statistically has a higher success rate for landing in an Interview. Once again, the important point identified was self-consciousness. Only through proper self-awareness, can we explain ourselves in an efficient manner.
After the presentations, mentoring sessions were held in which seniors with expertise in pharmaceutical industry guided and mentored young professionals. It was a unique opportunity to speak with people who can provide a wider perspective about their respective disciplines, and perhaps advice on professional career planning, and what to expect from the future. The mentoring session was a learning opportunity for both the mentors and the attendees, as different ideas were exchanged and discussions on various topics were held.
